June 1 – Cathedral Grove And Little Qualicum Falls

It was a grey day with a few patches of sun but the forecast called for rain in the early afternoon. We did two short walks in case it really started coming down.

Cathedral Grove is a grove of very tall western red cedars. It is on everyone’s to do list. Being right off the highway to Tofino and the fact that walks are short and flat make it always busy.

We will drive by here with the RV when we move to Port Alberni but there is no way I was going to try and park it here.

There is a short loop trail on either side of the highway.

A few decades ago a very strong wind storm blew through the grove and knocked a lot of the trees down. Their roots don’t go down very far so if the soil lets go, over they go. There are even signs at the entrance that says “If the wind is strong, do not enter”.

Heading to the car we backtracked to Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park. We did the short loop (in solid red) to view the lower and upper falls and the twisty deep gorge in between.

This looked like a great place for lunch.

As we were sitting there its started to rain. Never very hard but enough to get us to put our rain jackets on. We moved on, across the bridge to the other side of the gorge.
